Bellingham children are invited to get creative – and earn some cash – at Bellingham Public Library’s 41st Annual Children’s Craft Fair.

The Craft Fair will be held Friday, July 31, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on the Central Library Lawn. Children ages 13 and younger register to have a booth space; registrations will be accepted at the library until Tuesday, July 28.
The public is encouraged to attend this popular event; bargains abound with nothing selling for more than $4.00. Children keep all the money they earn. Some of the items expected at this year’s fair are jewelry, paper flowers, aromatherapy eye pillows, note cards, juggling kits, water balloons, stuffed animals, t-shirt bags, and a broad array of baked goods.
Over the years, the maximum price has increased slightly to reflect the rising cost of materials. The intent is to maintain a balance so items are affordable for the many children who shop at the fair, while allowing the crafters to make a profit on their creations.
“The library provides the inspiration, place, and some publicity and the rest is up to the children and their families. Children are involved in all aspects of the fair. They make the crafts, plan their booth, invite friends and neighbors to attend, set up, sell and clean up afterwards,” said Helen Scholtz, a Children’s Library staff member who has helped with the Craft Fair for many years.
“Each year I am amazed at the creativity and enthusiasm of the children. I never fail to find treasures that I’m excited to purchase. I have attended over 28 fairs and it is always fresh and new. People compliment me whenever I wear a pair of earrings I purchased about 10 years ago at the Craft Fair. My family counts on getting notes written on cards with children’s art work,” she said.
During the Craft Fair, the Central Library lawn takes on a very festive air with booths, sun umbrellas, buyers, and sellers. Music will be provided from noon to 1:00 p.m. by students of violinist Anna Schaad.
In the event of rain, the fair will be postponed 2 weeks to Friday, August 14, 2009.
