If you love poetry, and want to share your love of poetry with young readers, check out a few of the following special events taking place in Bellingham and Whatcom County throughout April to celebrate National Poetry Month.

The theme for 2009 Poetry Festival at Ferndale Public Library is “Hats Off to You.” Throughout April, an exhibition of hats showcasing historical fashion, cultural diversity, and creative fun can be found at the library. The exhibition is a collaborative effort by the Friends of the Ferndale Library, library staff, students of Windward High, and Louise Sager.

Ferndale Public Library is also hosting two evenings of poetry on April 14th and April 28th at 6:30 PM. Local poet Ken Warfel will share some of his poetry, as will students from local high school and middle schools. Anyone interested in listening or sharing their love of poetry is encouraged to participate in this free event. Refreshments are available too!

Residents of Blaine can also celebrate their love of rhyming verse with a special poetry contest. The topic is “Why I Love Living in Blaine,” and winners will be awarded to Adults, Teens (ages 12-18), and Children (ages 6-11). Your winning poem could be used in Blaine promotional materials, so if you love your community, start writing! Entries are due at the Blaine Public Library by April 26th at 6 PM.

All Whatcom County residents are invited to submit poems for the 4th Annual Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest. Winner will be honored at a ceremony on May 13th at the Whatcom Museum and their poems will be on display around town at the Bellingham Public Library and on WTA buses. Poetry deadline is April 15th; submission guidelines available at Whatcom Community Foundation.

Village Books always has great “Literature Live” events with authors and this month’s schedule features a number of poets. And for aspiring poets, Village Books Open Mic Night is April 27th at 7 PM; just sign-up at the main counter on the first floor.

Happy poetry reading and writing this month!
