Bellingham – Get Up and Get Movin'! Through Whatcom County’s Get Movin’ Winter program, kids and families can combat the winter blues, stay fit, eat right, and have fun together at free events all over the county for a month. Get Movin’ challenges participants to be physically active 5 days a week, 30 minutes a day for 1 month.

All activities through the Get Movin’ program are free. All it takes is to register at City of Bellingham - EZReg or pick up registration forms at Bellingham Parks and Recreation by January 1, 2009. Physical health is greatly improved by exercising 30 minutes a day for 5 days a week for 1 month. Children model their physical activity based on their family’s activities and expectations. Many options for physical activity and making healthy choices exist in Whatcom County. A coordinated effort from businesses and organizations can make a difference in Whatcom County. And yet, the data for Whatcom County shows that physical inactivity is on the rise, 60% of adults in our county are overweight or obese, exercise drops off in our teenagers after middle school, and that only 1/3 of our county’s residents consume five fruits and vegetables a day.

Help us kick off 2009 with a resolution for health: Families and kids are invited to attend the Winter Get Movin’ Resolution Kick-Off Event Wednesday, December 31, 2008 from 6:00 – 9:00 pm at the Bellingham Sportsplex where all kinds of activities will be offered free!

The program is organized by the Whatcom County Health Department, Bellingham Parks and Recreation, the Whatcom Physical Activity Coalition, and the Whatcom Coalition for Healthy Communities and enjoys the support of dozens of organizations and business helping Whatcom County residents practice healthy lifestyles.

The project’s current target audience is youth and their families. The primary objectives of the Whatcom County’s Get Movin’ program are to promote increased physical activity, inform people of the physical activity options available in Whatcom County, and through our partners increase education about making healthy lifestyle choices.
