The Community Transportation Advisory Group (CTAG) has launched a new website called Transportation Town to help make information about our regional transportation options more accessible, and to engage the public in the transportation planning process. The website features information about transportation in Whatcom County and includes an interactive game that lets visitors build their own city and earn points for city appeal, pollution reduction, and mobility.

The game appeals to kids and adults alike and models decisions that planners make when thinking about our community. According to the instructions, the goal is “to build a happy, prosperous city by making building and transportation decision that keep city mobility high, pollution low, and the people happy!”

The game will help kids, and adults, understand the codependent relationship between population, industry, and, transportation. For example, adding more housing in your city will increase population, which also increases your city’s income. But more people will also require increased modes of transportation, which means more pollution.

“Transportation Town is exciting, fun, and engages individuals to think about viable solutions,” said CTAG member and former Whatcom County Council candidate Chris Hatch.

Along with the game itself, the website also provides “factoids” about transportation systems in Bellingham and Whatcom County, and provides links if you’re interested in learning more about resources for pedestrians, carpoolers, and other options for transportation.

The site also allows users to submit feedback about Whatcom County transportation networks, and fill out a survey about personal transportation priorities and how to networks can be improved in Whatcom County.

The CTAG is a citizen-based group that advises the Whatcom Regional Transportation Policy Board on the community's concerns to help reach a collaborative vision for Whatcom County's transportation system.
