Kids can learn about shapes and practice scissor-skills while making winter decorations. An easy activity without much clean up.

Materials

  • kid-safe scissors
  • white, square-shaped paper (or of assorted colors, if you’re feeling non-traditional)

Directions

If you’re starting off with rectangular paper, fold the corner down to the opposite side of the paper to make a triangle. Trim off the extra paper with your scissors. You now have a square paper folded in half. Fold the triangle in half again, and again, as many times as you want.

Begin cutting designs into the edge of the triangle. Make sure that at least part of the folded side remains intact-- otherwise, your snowflake will fall apart. When you’ve finished cutting, unfold your snowflake to see what design you’ve created. Now you can tape up snowflakes to your windows or attach a string to hang them on your tree.

Another option is to make your snowflakes out of doilies so your cutting design only adds to the intricate pattern.
