Welcome to Bellingham! Perhaps we’re a bit biased, but we think Bellingham is a great place to live, work, play, learn, and explore. If you’re new to the area or thinking of relocating to this beautiful community by the bay, here are some useful resources for your family to help you get settled.
This friendly message, courtesy the Fairhaven Lions Club, greets visitors on Boulevard Street.
Friendly Neighborhoods
There are 23 Neighborhoods in Bellingham, each with unique residential, commercial, and recreational opportunities. For example, the south Bellingham neighborhood known as Fairhaven features many single-family houses within walking distance of the neighborhood’s commercial center with a grocery store, retail shops, and plenty of restaurants for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert.
Or if you like a quieter lifestyle, perhaps the Whatcom Falls Neighborhood would be a better fit. Developed at about four units per square acre, Whatcom Falls is close to Whatcom Falls Park, Bloedel Donovan Park (with water access to Lake Whatcom), and about 60 acres of land that remains untouched for future park and trailhead development.
To find out about other neighborhoods, visit Neighborhood Profiles. You also might want to check out Bellingham Public Schools to find out more about the public schools that your child will potentially attend.
Check It Out at the Library
Bellingham Public Libraries and Whatcom County Libraries offer a variety of free programs for children and adults throughout the year, from storytimes to book discussion groups to craft fairs. Attending these programs is a great way to meet other parents or find people with similar interests in your neighborhood.
The opening of a new library branch in Barkley Village this month, the first new Bellingham Library branch to open in 84 years, continues our city's legacy of encouraging community and promoting literacy for all.

A Sense of History
For such a small town, there sure are a lot of museums in Bellingham, many of them within walking distance of each other. Whether you’re new to town or have lived here for years, there’s always something new to see and explore at one of these great educational facilities.
The 1892 Old City Hall building, itself an artifact of Victorian architecture and Bellingham’s early history, is one of four buildings operated by the Whatcom Museum of History and Art that exhibit contemporary art and regional history throughout the year. A new building for the Art Museum and Children’s Museum is currently under construction at Grand Avenue and Flora Street, and scheduled to open in 2009.
Also in downtown Bellingham, you’ll find the Bellingham Railway Museum, which features historical maps and photographs of railroading through the years in Whatcom County and Skagit counties. This museum also displays extensive model sets and an interactive train simulator that will keep kids entertained for hours.
Other museums in Bellingham include the American Museum of Radio and Electricity, the Heritage Flight Museum, and the Bellingham International Maritime Museum.
