Dianna and Luke Del Diorgio had discussed starting their own business, perhaps a bed and breakfast, during their retirement years. But after the birth of their son Isaiah, now 3, they decided that owning a business now would allow them to spend more time together as a family. They opened up Caffe Adagio, located in downtown Bellingham, in August of 2006.

“It’s a lot of work,” Dianna admits, “but it’s worth it to have time together. And we enjoy working with each other so it's fun for us too.” With the consistent presence of their son around the shop, Caffe Adagio has a family-friendly vibe that welcomes patrons of all ages to their restaurant.

The décor of Caffe Adagio is reminiscent of a rustic, Old World European café. Compared to the hustle and bustle of the rest of the world, everything seems to slow down at Caffe Adagio. If you’re in a rush to grab your coffee and go, you’ll miss out on the tranquility of the place and the quality of their product. You’ll also find bookshelves and chess sets near the fireplace, reminding you to get comfortable and stay awhile. Caffe Adagio also features live musical entertainment from time to time.

The café has ample seating, about twenty tables, as well as two couches. Its proximity to WWU and the Bus Station, as well as the complimentary WiFi, makes the café a popular study spot for students. But even among the university crowd, families can make themselves at home as well. One corner of the coffee house is filled with children’s books, puzzles and toys for kids to play with during a trip to Caffe Adagio.

“We put out the toys, not so much for our son, but for other parents in our situation. It’s hard to find a place to keep your child entertained while you can enjoy your coffee,” Dianna said.

In addition to their espresso, roasted by Caffé D’arte of Seattle, the menu at Caffe Adagio features salads and sandwiches made with fresh, organic ingredients. You can also order the Soup of the Day and an assortment of breakfast pastries. Their beverage selection also several specialty items, like Numi flowering teas. And of course, they have hot cocoa and Italian sodas on the menu to please the palates of the pre-school bunch.

Caffe Adagio is open from 7 AM to 6 PM Monday through Saturday, and 8 AM to 3 PM on Sundays. For more information, call (360) 671-1198.
