It's not fun to think about, but it's important to teach your child how to handle potentially dangerous situations.  Here are eight rules for safety that the Bellingham Police Department recommends teaching your children:

  1. I always check first with the person in charge before going anywhere—even with someone I know.

  2. I will check with my parents before I accept anything from anyone—even if I know them.

  3. I will take at least one friend with me when I go places or play outside.

  4. I know my full name, mailing address, telephone with area-code, and my parents’ names/work cell numbers.

  5. I will say “NO” if someone tries to touch me or treat me in a way that makes me feel scared, uncomfortable or confused.

  6. I know that I can tell my parents if I feel afraid, uncomfortable or confused.

  7. It’s okay to say “NO” sometimes, and I know how to find someone to help me.

  8. I am strong, smart and I have the right to be safe.

Spend some time going over each rule with your child.  Try making up a song or game to help them learn their phone number and address.  Make sure your child understands why it is important to learn these rules and be open to answering questions they may have.

When your child has successfully mastered these rules, you can print off this contract, courtesty of the BPD, for them to sign.  Having an "official" document will let them know that you trust them to make smart decisions.  You can also hang it in your child's room so they can see the list every day.  As reward for their hard work and to let your child know how much you appreciate their effort, create a positive association with this activity, like taking a trip to Mallard's or making a their favorite dinner.  Help your children understand how important it is for you to know that they are safe.
