Involving kids in the kitchen has many benefits such as quality time with you, life skills being learned, and self-confidence being built.  But before you get started in the kitchen, here are some health and safety reminders for cooking with your kids.

Safety in the Kitchen Curious kids are eager to help, but safety comes first.

Cleanliness
Washing your hands before handling food, either to prepare or eat, is a must, especially during cold and flu season.  Show your kids how to wash their hands properly with soap and water, both before and after food preparation.  Just follow these easy steps:

• Wet your hands.
• Put some soap in the palm of your hand.
• Scrub the backs, palms, wrists, and fingers for about thirty seconds.  To give kids a reference, it takes the same about of time to sing “Happy Birthday” two times.
• Instead of using a cloth or towel that can retain germs, use paper towels to dry hands and then again to turn off the faucet.

Hot Stoves
If they’re old enough to use the stove, teach them how to turn it on and off and where the heat is generated.  Show them where the fire extinguisher is located and how to use it.  Make sure they’re not wearing bulky clothing that may brush against an open flame.   Don’t put them on a step stool at the stove to stir. If they’re not tall enough to stir without the stool, they’re probably not old enough to be using the stove.

Handling Food
Given the food safety issue involved, avoid letting children handle raw meat.  When cooking with your kids, give them their own work space at the counter or table that can be kept separate from any meat preparation you’re doing.

Keep these tips in mind to ensure a fun and safe cooking experience for the whole family.
